Fortran Packaged by IOanyT Innovations - Fedora 34

Updated: May 24, 2023

OVERVIEW

FORTRAN was initially created to facilitate numeric and scientific computations on early mainframe computers. It gained popularity due to its efficiency in handling complex mathematical operations and its ability to generate highly optimized machine code.

Here are some key features and characteristics of the FORTRAN programming language:

  1. Numerical Focus: FORTRAN is primarily used for numerical computations and mathematical operations. It provides extensive support for numerical data types, arrays, and mathematical functions.

  2. Strong Static Typing: FORTRAN is a statically-typed language, which means that variable types must be declared before they can be used. This allows for early detection of type-related errors during the compilation process.

  3. Array Operations: FORTRAN includes built-in support for multidimensional arrays and provides a rich set of array manipulation operations, making it well-suited for scientific and engineering applications that often involve large amounts of numerical data.

  4. Performance Optimization: FORTRAN allows programmers to write efficient code by providing features such as loop unrolling, array indexing, and direct memory access. These features enable developers to take advantage of the underlying hardware architecture for improved performance.

  5. Subprogram Support: FORTRAN supports subprograms, including functions and subroutines, which allow code reuse and modular programming. Subprograms can be called from within the main program or other subprograms, enabling the organization and encapsulation of code.

  6. Backward Compatibility: FORTRAN has a long history, and newer standards have generally maintained backward compatibility with older versions. This means that legacy FORTRAN code can still be compiled and run on modern compilers.

  7. Lack of Modern Language Features: Compared to more recent programming languages, FORTRAN may be seen as lacking some modern features, such as object-oriented programming (OOP) support and dynamic memory allocation. However, recent versions of FORTRAN have introduced some object-oriented features.

GET STARTED

To choose a Region follow the below step:

1. Sign in to the AWS Management Console.

2. Choose a service to go to that service's console.

3. In the navigation bar, choose the name of the currently displayed Region. Then choose the Region to which you want

to switch.

Step instructions for how to assess and monitor the health and proper function of the application:

1. Navigate to your Amazon EC2 console and verify that you're in the correct region.

2. Choose Instance and select your launched instance.

3. Select the server to display your metadata page and choose the Status checks tab at the bottom of the page to review if your status checks passed or failed.

To verify the installation, follow the below instructions

Step 1. Connect to SSH:

  1. Open the Amazon EC2 console at https://console.aws.amazon.com/ec2/.

  2. In the navigation pane, choose Instances.

  3. Select the instance and choose Connect.

  4. Choose SSH Client

  5. Copy the SSH command and paste it into the terminal.

ssh fedora@publicIP -i [Path of key pair file]

If it shows an access denied message run the following command, then run the above command again to connect via ssh.

chmod 400 [Path of key pair file]

Once launched in the Amazon EC2 Service, please connect to the instance via an SSH client using the ec2-user with the key pair associated at launch. Once connected as the ec2-user user, you will be able to sudo to the root user

Step 2. Verify the installation

Follow the steps to verify the Fortran installation

1. Login with ssh

2. Type the below command to check the version

3. To check the version :

gfortran --version

How to use Fortran in the terminal :

1. After connecting with ssh write the below command:

sudo nano HelloWorld.f90

3. Paste the following code into the file:

program HelloWorld
  implicit none
  ! Print "Hello, World!"
  print *, "Hello, World!"
end program HelloWorld

2. After that use the below command :

gfortran -o HelloWorld HelloWorld.f90

3. Then use the below command for output :

./hello_world

The output "Hello, World !" should appear in your terminal.

That's it! You have successfully printed "Hello, World!" using Fortran in the terminal.

4. After using the above command then verify written the below command mentioned below image:

To monitor and assess application functions:-

a. Navigate to your Amazon EC2 console and verify that you're in the correct region.

b. Choose Instances and select your launched instance.

c. Select the server to display your metadata page and choose the Status checks tab at the bottom of the page to review if your status checks passed or failed.
